Levoquin containing the active ingredient Levofloxacin belongs to a type of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones. Its primary use is treating infections caused by bacteria. Infections of the urinary tract, kidneys, skin, sinus, prostate as well as other infections of the body are all effectively treated with Levoquin. In addition to this, it is often used to treat pneumonia and chronic bronchitis. Because antibiotics work by targeting and fighting the bacteria that causes infections to occur, they will not work on viral infections such as the common cold or flu.

Patients who have been prescribed Levoquin are normally given specific instructions by their doctor regarding the dosage and length of time for which they need to be treated. You should note that the exact dosage required varies, and because this medication treats many different types of infections, doctors normally prescribe the dosage based on the infection needing treatment and the severity of the condition. The majority of adult patients will be told to take it once per day. However, when taking Levoquin, it is essential to continue taking it until the full prescribed amount has been finished.

Levoquin may cause unwanted side effects such as: insomnia, indigestion, itching of the vagina, vaginal discharge, pain in the stomach.

Before you start taking Levoquin, you are advised to ask your doctor about the risk of more serious adverse reactions. Although severe side effects are uncommon, it is still possible, and all patients must note that it is necessary to seek immediate medical care if a serious reaction occurs, such as blisters on the skin, tremors, seizures, eating less than you usually would, unusual bruising or any other signs of a severe reaction.

Levoquin can put you at increased risk of developing tendinitis or a rupture of the tendon. This may occur in the hand, ankle, shoulder or elsewhere in the body. Before you commence treatment, ask your doctor about the risks and benefits of using Levoquin.

Levoquin should not be used to treat patients who have myasthenia gravis, as it may worsen this condition. Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.
