Januvia active ingridient is Sitagliptin, an oral anti-diabetic drug. It is categorized as a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor. Januvia is prescribed for the treatment of Type 2 Diabetes, also known as diabetes mellitus type two. Usually doctors prefer to prescribe Januvia over other anti-diabetic medicines because it does not result in that many side effects. Other drugs can lead to heavy weight gain and hypoglycemia but such effects are reduced with the use of Januvia.
Januvia is used to treat diabetes mellitus and it works by inhibiting dipeptidyl peptidase-4, an enzyme that is responsible for breaking down certain hormones that are released when a meal is consumed. When the enzyme is prevented from performing its function the hormones reduce the problems associated with diabetes. By consuming Januvia you can maintain your blood sugar levels without worrying about them becoming too low or too high after a meal.
It is very important to stick to the prescription that is given to you. You should only consume the amount of tablets that your doctor advises. Continue to consume the tablets only for as long as your doctor has recommended. You can either eat food before or after you take the tablet, it does not make a difference. You should store your Januvia tablets in a cool and dry place so that they do not get damaged over time.
You will need to go in for frequent checks so that your doctor can monitor your blood sugar levels. Make sure that you attend all the scheduled appointments so that your doctor can make sure that Januvia is working for you.
It is important to remember that your blood sugar can drop severely if you exercise for too long, drink alcohol or go through any stress. Similarly, if you skip a meal your blood sugar levels will decrease very quickly. You should familiarize yourself with the symptoms of hypoglycemia, i.e. low blood sugar, so that you can treat yourself no matter where you are. Keep glucose gel, candy or orange juice, for example, with you at all times so that you can stabilize your blood sugar even if you don’t have access to medical help.
To see the best results you should use Januvia continuously. Make sure you have a steady supply with you, especially when traveling.
If you have missed a dose it is possible to take the tablet a little later. However, if it is already time for your next dose then you should not take two tablets to make up for the one you missed. This could lead to an excess of medicine and may compromise your health. Simply take one tablet and forget about the one you missed. If you think you may have overdosed on Januvia then you should rush to the hospital for medical assistance. The symptoms of an overdose include seizures, stomach pain, blurred vision and extreme weakness so if you notice any of these you should get medical help immediately.
You cannot use Januvia if you are allergic to sitagliptin so you should inform your doctor of any allergies before consuming the drug. If you are suffering from diabetic ketoacidosis you should immediately inform your doctor, as Januvia cannot be taken in this case. You must avoid Januvia if you suffer from any kidney diseases or if you have a history of pancreatitis.
You must make sure that your blood levels stay normal at all times. Hypoglycemia occurs when you skip meals, exercise for too long, get stressed or drink alcohol. If you notice symptoms such as a headache, weakness, sweating or irritability then your blood sugar may be very low. You should always carry a small source of sugar with you, be it candy or glucose tablets. You can also carry orange juice or milk to ensure that your blood sugar levels are stable throughout the day. If you feel severe pain in your stomach or if your heart rate drastically increases then you should stop taking the tablets and let your doctor know immediately. Other serious side effects include nausea and vomiting or a loss of appetite.
If you experience the following side effects you shouldn't worry as Januvia can commonly cause these: sore throat; headache; diarrhea.
If however you feel severe pain in your upper stomach that spreads to your back then you may be suffering from pancreatitis. You should get medical assistance immediately when you notice such an effect.
